Yummy pink Daytimer binder with FC inserts

Although I vowed not to buy any new ring binders this entire year, I received this beautiful binderbfrim Day timer today. Since I ordered it way before Christmas, I guess I'm still good, right? ;-)

So, why did I order a Daytimer binder despite being happily married to my FC Compact Aurora? The answer is short and simple : COLOR!
But first let me introduce you to the portable raspberry Malibu binder in pebble-grain cowhide ....

Very girly and pinkish, right? And actually pretty huuuuuuuuuge, although it has only 25mm rings! You'll see what I mean in the next picture where I compare it to the meanwhile infamous Malden:

And while we're at it, here's a side-by-side with the crimson Malden and the tan (or rather brick red) Franklin Covey Aurora!

And a comparison with the A5 Finchley:

The Malibu has a big bonus : it's not padded, just a double layer of leather, which makes it superfloppy, just the way I love my binders.

This means that not only does it lay flat as a pancake...

... it could also fly away if I would allow it to!

So, how about its inards? On the left, the Malibu comes with only three, yet roomy credit card slots, one ID slot, a large slip pocket behind that, where you could comfortably fit some paper money, and a very spacious zip pocket.

On the right-hand side there's a notepad pocket plus two smaller credit card sized pockets on top of it.

And did you see the pen loops?! They're TWO of them and they are so roomy that even a fat Lamy fountain pen would still be a loose fit!
Nearly goes without saying, but the FC inserts are a perfect fit.

The Malibu binder is available in tons of colors like pink, coral, red, purple (allegedly more a brownish purple), bright blue, apple green, latte and black.
It does miss the delicious leather smell of Filofaxes, but the leather is very nice and soft to the touch.

Too bad I vowed not to buy more, cost I would have loved this one in even more colors .....

  1. Ooh - that does look nice, and the Franklin Covey inserts being that little bt wider just seem a little more user friendly to me... :o)

    1. But isn't it odd, that Daytimer chose to have such gigantic binders, when there paper inserts are actually the same small size as Filofax? I think the regular inserts would look tiny and lost in this binder ...

    2. The regular inserts do tend to look lost. I have a daytimer black nappa binder and it is gorgeous but the 'leftover' leather after I put standard personal sized inserts in it just bugs me. I would only use that one with Franklin Covey inserts. Gorgeous binder btw

  2. Ooh, pretty! I haven't been tempted to switch to any other planners brands yet as I have just discovered Filofax in the middle of last year. But, you've just given me an idea of one in case I decide to stray. :)

    1. Well, you're bound to stray once you encounter your first ring problem. Although Filofax does have extremely beautiful binder designs. Not just the appearance, but also the leather ...

  5. That is a gorgeous color and I love the floppy type binder. I'm extremely jealous of the two pen loops. I think every planner should have two, fat pen loops.

    Congratulations!

    1. Totally agree on the penloops! Especially when you carry two 4-color pens for ultimate color-coding ... ;-)

  6. I had the purple one and sent it back I just hated the buckle. I liked everything else tho. I have since purchased the Malden and I love it.

    1. I guess, having used Franklin Covey binders, I'm meanwhile used to these buckles. What's with these buckles anyway? Is that some kind of fashion trend, that totally went by me ...?
That said, I don't find it bothersome in this Malibu binder. I like that the buckle stays "waaaaay" out of the way when I open the binder (Malden and me sometimes got into a little catfight over where the clasp was supposed to be ...).
Can you confirm that the purple Malibu is more brownish? You wouldn't happen to have a picture, do you?

  7. I have very bad impressions of FC organisers and you showing one that is quite similar to Malden and also being real leather really intrigued me. Are you using FC inserts of FF ones since this binding is now slightly wider than FF.

    1. Sorry for the confusion... you are using Day Timer organiser which I also don't see as being really good usually. Thank you for showing that it can be great... didn't know they had a flimsy one. How do you like using FC inserts? They are slightly wider.

    2. I absolutely love FC inserts! They are the main reason I strayed from Filofax....

  8. Oh no!!! Here I thought I couldn't find anything to compare with the Malden, which I have been using for almost two years!!!

      ... two pen loops.....

  9. I just noticed on the Daytimer site that the nautical blue one is $49.99 instead of $69.99... looks very tempting!

  10. Am I allowed to point out that on the daytimer.co.uk site that the raspberry Malibu is £29.95 (£36 incl. vat)...?

  12. I would love to, but don't know how !! I have only just plucked up the courage and mastered how to leave comments. If one of my more techie friends will teach me I'll give it a go. By the way, it has arrived and is just as yummy as you said. Not allowed to play with it yet though, as it's a prezzie for my birthday next week!

    1. Well, I'm very happy you left a comment on my blog! A guestpost is very easy btw. Just write what's on your mind in a word-doc (layout not important) and email a few photo's.
I'm very curious about the coral color! If you are on Twitter, would you post a pic there? I'm @J_is_hier on Twitter.

And starting your own blog is a no-brainer with Blogger. Just register, pick a name and choose one of the pre-installed layouts. You can change colors and backgrounds later one when you're more at ease.

  13. I was on the fence about ordering one of these and then I found this post and that sealed the deal. A portable size Malibu in Raspberry is now winging its way to me :-). Thanks for the pictures and the enabling Jotje!

  14. are you having issues with your finchley rings?

    1. You mean the purple A5 binder, shown in above picture? No, no issues at all, I'm in fact very happy with the quality!

  15. Beautiful binder. I find it interesting that its larger than the Malden and also fits the FC compact inserts because the Daytimer inserts are narrow like the Filofax inserts. Wonder why they made the binder so big. The Daytimer inserts must look lost in there! Nice option for the FC inserts though...binder looks much nicer than the current FC binder range. Thanks for sharing...and enabling!

I have a desk size Day Timer binder in black leather that has the same internal pocket configuration and its great. The leather is more smooth though, rather than pebbly. I like the look of the Malibu better. The desk size version that I have is also very flexible, bendy and floppy.

    1. Hi Cheryl, I couldn't believe the huge size either! I emailed DT and asked them to measure the binder for me, which they did. Only to have me responding that I would like to confirm the measurements, because I simply couldn't believe it. But it was true. I think though, that his binder would look very out-of-place with the normal Daytimer inserts (which are the same size as FF personal).

  16. I am soooo tempted. I have an old 365 compact FC binder right now. I love it, but it's black and not real leather. The size is perfect and it fits so well in my purse, but the Malibu...drools.

  17. Did you have to trim the FC inserts to fit, or do they fit un-trimmed? Do the tabs hang out at all? It's hard to tell by the photo. Thanks!

    1. The Daytimer binder is wider than the FF ones. The FC will fit perfectly, no overhanging tabs, no trimming needed!

  20. Where were you able to find the Pink Malibu? I've searched everywhere. It was never released in the US and I'm surprised I can't even find any on e-bay :( I've tried searching international sites too with no luck. This is my dream planner :)
